PSYC132 PO - Developmental Psychopathology

When Offered: Offered alternate years; next offered fall 2016.
Instructor(s): J.Borelli
Credit: 1

The field of developmental psychopathology lies at the interface of two subfields within psychology - the study of development and the study of psychopathology. In this course, we will first critically examine the ways in which atypical development diverges from normative developmental trajectories, using theories within the field to guide our thinking and paying careful attention to contextual factors that ought to be considered when evaluating what constitutes psychopathology (e.g., family environment, cultural context). Second, we will explore the research literature on different types of psychopathology in children, with a focus on how symptom presentation differs by the developmental stage of the child. Finally, we will discuss modes of intervention for psychopathology in children and their efficacy. Prerequisites: PSYC 051 PO .
