    Using a systematic evidence-based approach, the course addresses two inquiries: how social and cultural norms (e.g., social status, power relationship, and social distance) affect the use of Chinese language; and how second language learners develop their ability to use Chinese appropriately in different contexts. Required readings will focus on current trends in Chinese linguistics and second language acquisition. All readings will be in English but with examples in Chinese.
